Counting
As Pilates Instructors we get a bad reputation on our ability (or inability) to count. To help there are a couple of different ways to do this but the most common will be your time-based versus rep-based. Both have pros and cons.
Time-Based: Flow & Freedom
Time-based cueing lets clients move at their own rhythm, syncing with their breath for a natural, organic flow.
Rep-Based: Rhythm & Unity
This has an element of control, delivered through rhythm and tempo. So when you guide people through the reps it allows them to move in unison, it creates energy and connection.
Which is better / which one should I use?
Ultimately, when you first start teaching, sometimes using time-based is a little bit easier. It creates space to gather your own thoughts and prepare mentally for your next cue. It also gets you out of the habit of continuously counting numbers.
However as long as you understand what your purpose is and what you're hoping to achieve, either or doesn't really matter. Remember as well, we are Pilates Instructors and not accountants, so don't worry too much about it! Give both a go and see which one works for you!
