What kind of teacher do I want to be?

If you take a moment to reflect on your favourite teacher or teachers - what is it about them that you love?

I really found at the beginning of my career, I wanted to emulate my teachers. I would follow what they said, use their cues and become almost like a “mini” version of them. It is important to have a teacher or mentor to lead, guide and inspire you, but it’s also important to uncover what it is you value.

Taking some time to reflect on your teachers, experiences you have had and your classes will help inform this. Also, educating yourself. Continuous learning is essential so that you are aware and informed to make decisions on how you want to teach. It will also help you think critically and maybe question why things are a certain way - and maybe why you’d want to do things differently or not.

At the end of the day - being true to yourself, your values as a teacher will help you create real connections to people which really does underpin teaching.
